Moreover since you are already filed 485 and its more than 6 months you are secure.
For rest the situation is precarious
As it relates to my green card application, my situation is relatively better than some. If you search my previous posts, you will note my similar expression of frustration a few months/years ago. I don't want to go into the details behind how justifiable my frustration felt at the time - those are facts that I can do nothing about.
So I gave up and quickly made plans to return to our homeland. I was lucky to have a moment of clarity about a month before pulling any triggers because shortly thereafter, I read Lance Armstrong's book - "It's Not About the Bike". "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl was another very inspring work for me. I have since read many books on similar subjects - some good and some not so good - but more importantly, I now believe, with all my heart, that how I feel is entirely up to me. Not only is it just up to me, I am 100% accountable for it.
I am not saying you shouldn't express your feelings or seek the comfort of friends when you want to. I am simply offering some details around what works for me and why I am not as frustrated as I once was.
My green card "struggle" - if you can call it that - no longer impedes my ability to enjoy this moment. There are more people-including children-facing far more significant challenges across all walks of life. I accept my green card situation for what it is. I work everyday on what I ought to be doing and strive to leave doubt and worry behind (per Huxley's age old advice). This works for me.
I would love nothing more for it to work for everyone.

That should give an idea how many members are really "active" on IV.

"On August 17, 2007, we received this I485 APPLICATION TO REGISTER PERMANENT RESIDENCE OR TO ADJUST STATUS..........................."
My recepit date was however July 2nd 2007. Are they processing my application or they go by received date of 8/17?
can someone explain how this works?
no one knows..if u call up the cust service ppl.. they will say we received it on aug 17th..so thats the RD..we know better...but doesnt get us anywhere

Me too. Actually , when the movement is not systematic and the gates are wide open, then they randomly pick up the cases and approve whatever file comes to them. The ones with older PDs suffer a lot while the ones with new ones get their GCs.

Not trying to be pessimitic her but any new hires will need to be trained, and infrastructure need to be set up. All these things do not happen overnight.
Also, there are dependancies. I-485 information needs to be entered in the system and A # on I-140 need to be crosschecked. If one is not available already then it needs to be generated.
All these add to the time.
You are not pessimistic. I know how federal contracting happens. If I am the federal contractor to USCIS and I have a contract with them. Lets say contract 's scope of work to process 485, 140, 765, 131 apps. USCIS can always add money to existing contract and ask for more man hours for the contract year. Most of the time Federal Installations have extra space to accomodate new temp resources.
So in 2-3 months they can add more resources to take care of this shit. But I can say for sure that dont expect EAD or AP in 3 months.

There are lot of good/standard consulting companies ... Some are 'con' but they can't create massive impact , however the MNC's do MANIPULATION at a large scale.
Do not generalise all consulting companies...At least people working in these consulting companies sponsored GC and buying house and spending their money here. Most of the fradulent GC process was done by these croocked indian companies. They exploited the EB1C system to the maximum extend. Most of the times, they are not filing the GC and keep the employees as slaves or they exploit the EB1c fo their boot lickers.

why USCIS/ DOL needs a law to re-capture visa # which were not used in previous years ?
I mean Congress already authorized these ? Canot DOL/ UCIS make a judgement based on their own ?

Yep thats true , as of now all this shouldnt stop one from filing 140/485 what ever it is , we are only trying to interpret to the best of our knowledge in current format. For ex. if you remember labor substitution bill was introduced in Last year 2006 and every one was eager and curious about it but it was only enacted in July 2007. Similarly i 100% believe they will give some time to switch and in case it would be good enough buffer. If you think u can file dont even think of rest , right what is law is what should it be.

USCIS has not even posted January processing times till now. This should have been published by Dec 15th.
